Projects
From major infrastructure and renewable energy projects to complex earthworks, see where our experience has taken us.
Project Experience Across Scotland
A proven track record across wind farms, substations, overhead power lines, distillery infrastructure and major earthworks.
Selected transmission access projects
- Beauly–Denny — 74 km
- Inveraray–Crossaig — 72 km
- Tomatin–Knocknagael — 28 km
- Dounreay–Myster — 26 km
- Bhlairidh–Beinneun — 23 km
- Boat of Garten projects — 30 km
Over 250 km of selected transmission access works delivered across Scotland.

Spittal Substation
Earthworks and on-site processing delivered for major energy infrastructure.
75,000 m³
Soil
60,000 m³
Soft excavation
200,000 m³
Hard rock excavation
260,000 m³
On-site processing
The scale of the works required coordinated excavation, processing, movement and placement of material across the site.
Thurso South
A substantial earthworks package delivered beside an environmentally sensitive watercourse.
A 500-metre system of ponds, ditches and check dams was established early to manage surface water and protect tributaries of the River Thurso.
The river is designated as both a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. The water-management system remained effective through significant earthworks and wet winter conditions.
70,000 m³
Soft excavation
65,000 m³
Hard excavation
47,000 m³
Imported material
Mybster Substation
Experience managing peat, imported material and remote logistics.
26,000 m³
Peat
48,000 m³
Imported material
Planned movement and placement of material supported safe, controlled progress across the site.
Overton (Macallan) – Phase 4
Large-scale excavation, processing and placement supported by owned LEBHERD plant and experienced teams.
1.2 m³
Bulk excavation
390,000 m³
Fill to bunds
810,000 m³
Fill to platforms
The project required practical engineering solutions across remote, steep and environmentally sensitive terrain.
Beauly-Denny
One of Europe’s largest overhead transmission projects, extending more than 220 km and incorporating over 600 towers.
75,000 km+
Access track

Piling platforms
400+
Crane access pads
61
Rock anchor sites
The project required practical engineering solutions across remote, steep and environmentally sensitive terrain.
Recognised for delivery and leadership
Balfour Beatty’s Managing Director’s Subcontractor Excellence Award recognised performance across the UK and Ireland.
The Edward Mackay engineers and supervisors went the extra mile and proactively identified areas where additional fencing was required to protect the A9 during construction and use.
The additional access works reduced helicopter use, improved progress and enabled construction teams to reach some of the most challenging tower locations on the route.
